Do you want to help students access tertiary education without needing to leave their community?
Eligible organisations are encouraged to apply for funding to establish one of up to 10 new Regional University Study Hubs.
The hubs provide students in regional and remote Australia access to:
- Computer and video conferencing facilities including high-speed internet access
- Break-out areas and study spaces
- Student support services such as help developing writing and research skills, study advice and assistance with administrative processes.
The hubs build strong links with other organisations in their area, including local industry and other support services that students may access. Industry and community groups can partner with Regional University Study Hubs to support students in regional and remote areas to study in their community.
As a trial for this round, universities can apply to operate a Regional University Study Hub, in collaboration with a regional or remote community. Universities are also strongly encouraged to partner with Regional University Study Hubs, to extend support for existing students and support increased participation and success for students from equity groups.
This round of funding follows a successful application round in 2023, where 10 new hubs were announced, plus funding to support two existing Country Universities Centres in New South Wales. There are currently 46 hubs located across all states and the Northern Territory.
Current Regional University Study Hub Centre Manager, Elspeth Hurse of the Country Universities Centre Balonne, has these tips for communities interested in applying to establish a hub:
- Build a strong, skilled board (with diverse community representation)
- Investigate the needs of your community and what is already available
- Reach out to existing Regional University Study Hubs to explore models and practices
- Explore potential for in-kind and sponsorship support
- Commence partnerships and discussions with universities
- Plan and design with a view to growth.
As of May 2024, Regional University Study Hubs were supporting nearly 4,400 students, with many studying in areas of skills need such as health and education, as well as pathway courses which enable access to higher education.
